Campaign 08 - Part One

Well, two of the three Clintons came to Shepherdstown a few days ago. I was lucky enough to have members of her campaign and the campus coming in and out of my classroom as I was trying to give a final. Here are some photos from Hillary's speech, Chelsea's introduction (where she said that her mom would be the greatest president of her lifetime...hmmm....), and one great pic of my good friend Zeke.

Maypole # 2

Then the Maypole

This was my first May Day Celebration - last year I was teaching children the songs to Annie. The parade was interesting and unusual, as are most things in Shepherdstown. After the parade many people gathered by the Town Run to dance, sing, and wrap the Maypole. I don't have any photos of the group dances because, of course, I was dancing!

Spring Maidens did flower dances while children shared poppyseed cakes with everyone in the crowd.

I'm not sure what these people represented, but they are part of the town Morris dancing group.

Lots of stick dances. If you look closely you'll see that the town was able to hire Fleetwood Mac to play.

The children at the new daycare choreographed their own dance.

I think this dark horse represented the darkness of winter. He chased the children and then one of the men in red & orange fought him off to celebrate the coming of spring.

May Day Parade

Some musicians, including Jay Hurley on the Bodhran (the drum). He owns O'Hurley's General Store.

One of the Maypoles that came down German Street.

Shepherdstown is home to many odd and loud people, including this character. The unofficial motto here is, "Anything Goes."

This group did wheelbarrow choreography. It was like a WV version of the Macy's Parade.

Look closely and you'll see the unicyclist doing a flip (sans cycle).

This is one of my classrooms.

I teach here most of the week.

Next year I'll be teaching in the building behind the flagpole - Erma Ora Byrd Hall (yes, a mouthful - named after Senator Byrd's late wife). I have to go through special clearance to get access to the building. Hmmm...
